Listening Comprehension
Listening Comprehension is tested in the first part of
the TOEFL. In this section you will hear a series of conversations (either
dialogue or monologue) derived from a tape recorder or other audio device.
For most people, Listening comprehension is the most
challenging and difficult in the TOEFL test. Because in addition to the actual
TOEFL test requires require our ability to speak English, he also deals with
the strategy that we used in the exams.
I. Public Strategy
1.
Understand the forms of the command on each piece well before the day of
the exam.
2. Read the
answer choices for each question as much as possible when the narrator was memb

II. Part 1 : Short Conversation

(C) It couldn't have been more
difficult.
(D) It wasn't that hard.
You learn from the conversation that
the man thought the exam was very difficult and that the woman disagreed with
the man. The best answer to the question, "What does the woman mean?"
is (D), "It wasn't that hard." Therefore, the correct choice is (D).
III. Part 2 : Longer Conversation
1.
When the narrator discuss Part B direction you should read the answer
choices at a glance and then record it and predict what will be the theme of
conversation.
2. When
listening to the conversation, you have to know what theme / topic.
3. Beware of
each question.
4. Pay
attention to the conditions and circumstances that occurred during the
conversation, the conversation regarding the place and time, what and who is
concerned.
Example :
(narrator) Listen to a conversation on a university campus.
Man : You seem to know your way
around campus. Have you been here long?
Wom : I'm a senior literature major.
I'll be graduating next June.
Man : Your major is literature ?
Mine is, too. But I'm just beginning my work in my major. I just transferred to
this university from a junior college. Perhaps you could tell me about the
courses you've got to take for a literature major.
Wom : Well, for a literature major
you need to take eight courses, three required courses and five electives.
First, you have to take "Survey of World Literature, Parts One and
Two." This is really two courses, and it'll take two semesters, and it's
required for all literature majors. The other course required for all
literature majors is "Introduction to Literary Analysis."
Man : You mean, if I want to
specialize in American literature, I still must take two semesters of World
literature ?
Wom : Yes, because the two semesters
are required for all literature majors.
Man : But I only want to study
American literature !
Wom : At least you can take all of
your five elective courses in the area that you want.
Man : That's what I'll do, then.

IV. Part 3 : Talk
1.
If you have time, take a look at the answer choices listed in a booklet
and find the key word.
2. Beware
talks in sentences first because it usually will be the topic for the next
sentences.
3. Focus your
hearing on matters related to the 5-wh questions (what, who, when, where, why)
and how.
4. Draw
conclusions / inferasi of the situation when the conversation is done.

(narrator) Listen to an instructor talk to his class about
painting.
Man : Artist Grant Wood was a guiding force in the
school'of painting known as American regionalist, a style reflecting the
distinctive characteristics of art from rural areas of the United States. Wood
began drawing animals on the family farm at the age of three, and when he was
thirty-eight one of his paintings received a remarkable amount of public notice
and acclaim. This painting, called "American Gothic," is a starkly
simple depiction of a serious couple staring directly out at the viewer.
The question :
(narrator) What style of painting is
known as American regionalist ?
In your test book, you read :
(A) Art from America s inner cities.
(B) Art from the central region of the
United States.
(C) Art from various urban areas in
the United States.
(D) Art from rural sections of America.
The best answer to the question
"What style of painting is known as American regionalist?" is (D),
"Art from rural sections of America." Therefore, the correct choice
is (D).
The question :
(narrator) What is the name of Wood's
most successful painting ?
In your test book, you read :
(A) "American Regionalist"
(B) "The Family Farm in
Iowa"
(C) "American Gothic"
(D) "A Serious Couple"
The best answer to the question,
"What is the name of Wood's most successful painting ? "is (C),
"American Gothic." Therefore, the correct choice is (C).
